Six New HS2 Underground Platforms Open at Old Oak Common

Six underground platforms dedicated to high-speed trains have been completed at Old Oak Common station in west London, according to AOL.com. These platforms reach 450 meters below ground and form part of the HS2 railway expansion project intended to handle the new high-speed fleet.

Once fully operational, Old Oak Common will feature 14 platforms in total—six underground for HS2 services and eight ground-level platforms for conventional trains. The station is projected to accommodate around 250,000 passengers daily, serving as a major transit point connecting London with the Midlands, northern England, and Scotland.

Station Connectivity and Services

The new high-speed platforms will integrate with existing

rail routes including the West Coast Main Line, Great Western Main Line, Elizabeth line, and Heathrow Express. Old Oak Common will be the 42nd stop on the Elizabeth line. The station is designed to provide rail access to over 100 destinations across the UK.

Construction of the deep-level platforms commenced in April 2025. Progress continues with first platform slabs for the surface-level conventional platforms anticipated by late 2026. Work on the station roof is scheduled to start in early 2027.

Project Impact and Official Remarks

The Old Oak Common area director for HS2 highlighted the project’s scale and the station’s emerging form during site visits.

The forthcoming roof installation and ongoing tunnel works remain critical to completing the transport hub. The development aims to transform the local area by establishing a new, well-connected railway station and supporting a vibrant neighbourhood around it.

These underground platforms mark a significant phase in the UK’s largest railway station development, enabling capacity improvements and new high-speed connections on the HS2 network.
