Nearly 1,200 ground-handling employees at Groundforce Barcelona continued their strike on August 10, 2026, after walking out on August 4 over unsafe working conditions and staffing shortages. The strike involves staff responsible for check-in, boarding, baggage, and ramp operations at Josep Tarradellas Barcelona–El Prat Airport (BCN).
Flight Cancellations and Luggage Disruptions Persist
Groundforce provides ground services for 20 major international airlines, including United Airlines, Air France–KLM, Lufthansa, and Qatar Airways at BCN. At least 50 flights were canceled during the first five days of the strike, with ongoing delays and cancellations despite Spain’s Ministry of Transport imposing mandatory minimum service levels requiring between 35% and 80%
of normal operations on affected routes. Over 1,500 pieces of luggage remained stranded at Barcelona Airport during that period.
Travel Impact and Airline Response
Passengers at Barcelona Airport have experienced elevated disruptions including flight cancellations and baggage handling delays due to the strike. United Airlines responded by issuing a flexible travel waiver that allows travelers booked through BCN to change their flights without fees or fare differences through at least August 10, 2026.
Barcelona Airport handles more than 50 million passengers annually, serving as the main international gateway for Barcelona and the largest airport in Catalonia. It is Spain’s second-busiest airport after Madrid–Barajas. The ongoing
strike affects operations critical to the airport’s role in regional air traffic.
