Tourist arrivals in Greece totaled 7,429,931 in August 2026, marking a 2.6% increase from the same month in 2025. Overnight stays also climbed by 2.1%, reaching 34,685,695, according to provisional data released by the Hellenic Statistical Authority (ELSTAT).

Tourist Composition by Nationality

Foreign visitors represented 76.7% of total arrivals and accounted for 84% of overnight stays in August 2026. Greek residents comprised 23.3% of arrivals and 16% of overnight stays. Arrivals of foreign tourists increased by 2.9%, outpacing the 1.7% growth recorded for Greek residents. Overnight stays by foreigners rose 2.3%, compared to a 1.2% increase among Greeks.

Accommodation Type Performance

Rented rooms accommodation led growth in

tourist activity, with arrivals rising 5.2%, exceeding the 1.5% increase seen in Greek hotels and campsites. Overnight stays in rented rooms increased by 4.6%, substantially outpacing the 1.1% rise recorded in hotels and campsites. This indicates faster expansion in collective short-stay accommodations compared to traditional lodging.

Visitor Segmentation Within Accommodation

In hotels and campsites, foreign visitor arrivals grew by 1.9%, while Greek arrivals increased by 0.5%. Overnight stays by foreigners at these venues rose 1.2%, with a 0.8% uptick among Greeks. In rented rooms, arrivals of foreign visitors went up 5.5%, and Greek arrivals increased 4.2%. Overnight stays in rented rooms by foreign visitors

rose 5.1%, compared with a 2.2% increase for Greek residents.

Average Length of Stay

The average stay for all visitors remained stable at 4.7 days, unchanged from August 2025. Foreign tourists stayed an average of 5.1 days, nearly twice as long as Greek residents, who averaged 3.2 days. In hotels and campsites, the average stay length was 5.1 days for foreigners and 3.2 days for Greeks. Rented rooms saw similar patterns, with foreign visitors staying 5.2 days on average and Greek residents 3.3 days.

These figures confirm a consistent rise in tourist traffic in Greece in August 2026, driven primarily by foreign visitors and

stronger growth in rented room accommodations. Despite the increases in arrivals and overnight stays, the average length of stay remained unchanged from the previous year.
