Goa’s expanding tourism sector is generating new employment and business opportunities for local youth, according to www.aninews.in. With more than one crore tourist arrivals projected for 2025, the state’s tourism and hospitality industry contributes an estimated 16–17 percent to Goa’s economy. This growth is enabling residents to transform small enterprises and personal skills into sustainable livelihoods.
Skill Development Initiative Targets Youth
Hospitality firms in Goa are responding to the rising demand for skilled workers by promoting training initiatives. Ranjit Philipose, senior vice-president – operations at IHCL Goa, announced plans to establish a large skill development centre with residential facilities for young people who have completed
Class 10 or 12. The centre will provide training and certification aimed at preparing youth for employment within the sector.
Local Entrepreneurs See Financial Gains
Small business owners are benefiting from these tourism-driven opportunities. Arvind, a local entrepreneur who began with a tea stall, reported significant financial improvement and a transition from being a worker to a business owner. He said, “Earlier, we were ordinary workers, but now we have become entrepreneurs. Our financial situation has improved considerably, and we are earning well. Business is also doing well.”
Sustainable Products and Diverse Job Sources
The tourism sector also supports sellers of local handicrafts and eco-friendly products as alternatives to plastic items,
enhancing options for visitors. Local shopkeeper Mohammed Shafiuddin Sheikh highlighted, “These are environmentally friendly and sustainable products that offer a better alternative to plastic items. We sell souvenirs, bags and various useful products so that customers have a wide range of options.” Other roles benefiting from tourism’s growth include guides, photographers, and beach lifeguards.
Goa’s beaches, cultural experiences, cuisine, and shopping drive sustained visitor interest, linking tourism appeal with local entrepreneurship, skill development, and jobs.
