Germany and Switzerland have issued a travel advisory for summer 2026, urging passengers to prepare for increased airport congestion due to longer queues, flight delays, and expanded biometric border controls at key Central European hubs including Frankfurt Airport, Munich Airport and Zurich Airport.

Airline Mobile Apps and Operational Flexibility at Major Airports

Lufthansa and SWISS, among other carriers, are using official mobile applications to provide real-time updates on gate changes, revised boarding times, connection information and flight delays. This digital communication is particularly critical during peak periods when airports dynamically adjust aircraft parking, boarding gates and departure slots to improve operational efficiency and maintain aircraft safety.

Passengers are advised

to rely on airline mobile notifications and airport displays, instead of printed boarding passes, as rapid changes to flight operations occur frequently at Frankfurt, Munich and Zurich airports.

Border Control Management with Biometric and Manual Procedures

Germany and Switzerland operate modern automated border management systems alongside traditional passport control. At Frankfurt, Munich and Zurich airports, border authorities continuously redirect passengers between staffed immigration counters and automated biometric gates to balance passenger flow. These biometric technologies include facial recognition and electronic passport verification aimed at expediting processing for eligible travelers.

This flexible, real-time management is designed to handle fluctuating passenger volumes, especially during summer’s peak travel season, without imposing

new immigration requirements. Travelers must comply with airport signage and instructions from border officials while ensuring their passports and visas are valid before arrival.

Travel Advice on Connection Times and Ticketing

Airlines advise passengers to allocate additional time for check-in, security screening and immigration control, particularly for international transfers requiring passport checks or terminal changes. Travelers holding separate tickets face higher risks of missing connections amid delays.

Booking through a single airline or alliance is recommended to secure better protection against operational disruptions. Passengers must actively monitor airline notifications throughout their journey to adjust plans accordingly.

Tourism Infrastructure Remains Operational Amid Airport Challenges

Despite congestion and operational challenges at airports, major European cities such

as Berlin, Munich, Hamburg, Zurich, Geneva and Lucerne continue to have fully functioning tourism infrastructure. Rail services, hotels, museums and cultural attractions remain accessible and unaffected by airport processing delays.

Biometric technology is increasingly integral to international aviation in Germany and Switzerland, helping to manage high passenger volumes while maintaining security and efficiency during Europe’s busiest summer travel season of 2026.
