Severe thunderstorms and flash flooding struck New York City and northern New Jersey on July 19, 2026, prompting flash flood warnings and widespread travel disruptions. The National Weather Service issued multiple warnings across NYC and northern New Jersey as up to 3 inches of rain fell within several hours.
Newark Airport in New Jersey implemented a ground stop during the storm due to heavy rain and flooding, halting all departures and arrivals temporarily. Flight operations at LaGuardia Airport in New York City were also disrupted, with the airport advising passengers to verify flight statuses with airlines.
Flooding Leads to Road Closures and Emergency Rescues
Flash flooding inundated streets
and highways including the Clearview Expressway near Northern Boulevard in Queens, which was closed in both directions. Standing water caused major traffic delays on the Long Island Expressway and Maurice Avenue. Emergency road rescues were underway as officials responded to the rapidly rising floodwaters.
NYC Emergency Management urged residents to avoid flooded roads and basements, advising them to move to higher ground if necessary. They stated: “Localized flooding reported in parts of NYC. Don’t enter flooded roads or buildings. Stay out of flooded basements. Move to higher ground/floor if needed. Call 911 if you need immediate assistance. Avoid unnecessary travel.”
The agency recommended using the Metropolitan Transportation Authority and 511NY for travel updates.
Rainfall Totals and Forecast Amplify Flood Risks
The National Weather Service reported rainfall rates of 1 to 2 inches per hour and total rainfall amounts between 1 and 3 inches in parts of New York and New Jersey by mid-afternoon. A flood advisory was active for the Bronx until 3:30 p.m. Meteorologists forecasted an additional 0.5 to 1 inch of rain, with further thunderstorms possible from the southwest, heightening the potential for additional flash flooding in low-lying and poorly drained areas.
Ongoing Travel Impacts and Official Guidance
Flight disruptions at Newark and LaGuardia Airports and highway closures caused delays for
travelers in the region. LaGuardia Airport urged passengers to monitor flight schedules closely amidst changing weather conditions that could extend delays throughout the day. Officials advised residents to avoid unnecessary travel and to remain alert to updates as the weather event continued.
