Finnair Launches Daily Helsinki-Melbourne Flights Via Bangkok
Finnair will start daily flights between Helsinki Airport and Melbourne Airport via Bangkok Suvarnabhumi Airport starting October 25, 2026. The route will use Airbus A350 aircraft and include fifth-freedom rights on the Bangkok-Melbourne sector, allowing passengers to book travel on either individual leg. Finnair’s return flights from Melbourne will begin on October 26. This new service links Melbourne with about 90 European destinations through Helsinki.
Western Sydney International Airport Opens with Jetstar and Air New Zealand Services
Western Sydney International Airport will begin passenger operations on October 25, 2026,
with Jetstar operating the inaugural flight to Gold Coast Airport. Jetstar’s initial network from this airport will include up to 14 weekly flights to Melbourne, 4 weekly flights to Gold Coast, and 3 weekly flights to Brisbane, all using A320 aircraft. The airport operates without a nighttime curfew. Air New Zealand will commence three weekly flights from Western Sydney International to Auckland on October 26, 2026, using A320 and A321 aircraft. Air New Zealand will maintain its existing routes at Sydney Kingsford Smith Airport, offering passengers two Sydney gateways.
Etihad Airways Adds New Destinations in Saudi Arabia, Luxembourg, and Canada
Etihad Airways will start weekly flights from Abu Dhabi’s Zayed International
Airport to Saudi Arabia’s Red Sea International Airport on October 4, 2026, operating with A320 aircraft. The service will increase to twice weekly from October 25. This will be Etihad’s sixth destination in Saudi Arabia. Additionally, Etihad will launch four weekly flights from Abu Dhabi to Luxembourg Airport using A321neo-family aircraft during October, marking the first Middle Eastern airline to serve Luxembourg. Starting October 25, Etihad will also operate four weekly Boeing 787-9 flights connecting Abu Dhabi and Calgary International Airport, establishing the first nonstop air link between the Middle East and Western Canada. This follows the expansion of the
Canada-UAE air services agreement in December 2025, allowing up to 35 weekly passenger flights.
European Airlines Expand Long-Haul Services to Asia and Sri Lanka
Lufthansa will resume five weekly year-round flights from Frankfurt Airport to Kuala Lumpur International Airport starting October 25, 2026, employing 287-seat Boeing 787-9 aircraft. Swiss International Air Lines will begin five weekly flights from Zurich Airport to Bengaluru at the start of the 2026-27 winter season, marking its third Indian destination and first in southern India. British Airways will restart service to Sri Lanka, operating three weekly winter-season flights between London Gatwick Airport and Colombo Bandaranaike International Airport from October 23, 2026, using 777 aircraft. This
marks British Airways’ first flights to Sri Lanka in 11 years.
North American Carriers Add Routes to Asia, the Canary Islands, and Saudi Arabia
United Airlines will resume daily flights between Chicago O’Hare International Airport and Tokyo Narita Airport from October 24, 2026, using 787-8 aircraft. American Airlines plans to start daily service on the same route on March 27, 2027, with 787-9 aircraft. Air Canada will introduce two weekly flights from Toronto Pearson International Airport and one weekly flight from Montreal Airport to Tenerife South Airport beginning October 25 and October 31, 2026 respectively, using A321XLR aircraft. Delta Air Lines is scheduled to launch daily flights from Atlanta to Riyadh Airport on
October 23, 2026, utilizing A350-900 aircraft; flights may reduce to three weekly after the first week. This route will be Delta’s first service to Saudi Arabia and the first direct connection between the U.S. and Riyadh operated by a U.S. airline.
