Fifty new air routes are set to begin operations across Europe in October 2026 as the northern winter 2026-27 season commences, introducing significant international and regional connections, according to aviationweek.com. These launches involve numerous European airports and extend networks into Australia, North America, and the Middle East.

Finnair Debuts Helsinki-Melbourne Route via Bangkok

Finnair will inaugurate daily Airbus A350 flights between Helsinki Airport and Melbourne Airport via Bangkok Suvarnabhumi Airport starting October 25, 2026. The first return flight from Melbourne will operate on October 26. This route provides Finnair with fifth-freedom rights on the Bangkok-Melbourne sector, allowing passengers to book travel on either leg independently. The

service will connect Helsinki to roughly 90 European destinations, positioning Finnair as one of few European carriers operating their own aircraft to Australia.

Jetstar Launches Operations at Western Sydney International Airport

Western Sydney International Airport (WSI) will begin passenger flights on October 25, 2026, with Jetstar operating the inaugural service to Gold Coast Airport. Jetstar’s WSI schedule will include up to 14 weekly Airbus A320 flights to Melbourne, four weekly to Gold Coast, and three weekly to Brisbane. WSI is designed to serve Sydney’s western suburbs and operates without a nighttime curfew, offering extended operational hours compared to Sydney Kingsford Smith International Airport.

Air New Zealand Expands to Western Sydney

Air New Zealand will commence

thrice-weekly Auckland to Western Sydney International Airport flights on October 26, 2026, utilizing A320 and A321 aircraft. The airline will maintain its current Sydney Kingsford Smith International Airport operations, providing travelers with two gateway options to Sydney.

Etihad Airways Adds Three New October Destinations

Etihad Airways will start weekly Abu Dhabi’s Zayed International Airport flights to Saudi Arabia’s Red Sea International Airport on October 4, 2026, using A320 aircraft. Frequency will increase to twice weekly beginning October 25. Additionally, Etihad will launch four weekly Abu Dhabi to Luxembourg flights in October using A321neo-family aircraft, marking the first Middle Eastern carrier to serve Luxembourg. On October 25, Etihad

will also initiate four weekly Boeing 787-9 flights from Abu Dhabi to Calgary International Airport, establishing the first nonstop link between the Middle East and Western Canada. This follows a December 2025 expansion of the Canada-UAE air services agreement, increasing permissible weekly passenger frequencies to 35 for airlines from each country.

European Carriers Add Long-Haul Routes

Lufthansa is scheduled to resume five weekly Boeing 787-9 flights between Frankfurt Airport and Kuala Lumpur International Airport starting October 25, 2026. Swiss International Air Lines will begin five weekly Zurich Airport to Bengaluru services at the start of the winter season, making Bengaluru its third Indian destination after

Delhi and Mumbai.

British Airways Resumes Sri Lanka Flights

British Airways will reinstate three weekly London Gatwick Airport to Colombo Bandaranaike International Airport flights beginning October 23, 2026, ending an 11-year hiatus. The service will be operated with 777 aircraft. In 2025, approximately 452,000 two-way passengers traveled between the UK and Sri Lanka, predominantly connecting via Middle Eastern hubs.

North American Airlines Expand Asia and Canary Islands Services

United Airlines will resume daily Boeing 787-8 flights from Chicago O’Hare International Airport to Tokyo Narita Airport on October 24, 2026, competing with All Nippon Airways and Japan Airlines at the same airport. American Airlines plans to initiate daily Boeing 787-9 services on the Chicago-Tokyo Narita route

starting March 27, 2027. Air Canada will open two new routes to Tenerife South Airport in late October 2026 using A321XLR aircraft: a twice-weekly service from Toronto Pearson International Airport beginning October 25, followed by a weekly flight from Montreal Airport starting October 31. These will mark the only nonstop connections between North America and the Canary Islands.

Delta Air Lines’ Planned Atlanta-Riyadh Service

Delta Air Lines is scheduled to launch daily Airbus A350-900 flights from Atlanta Airport to Riyadh Airport on October 23, 2026, with frequency reducing to three weekly after the first week. If launched as planned, this route would be the first nonstop

service between the U.S. and Riyadh operated by a U.S. carrier. However, the airline has reportedly been reviewing this route amid ongoing regional uncertainties.
