Airlines plan to introduce 50 new flight routes across Europe starting in October 2026 during the northern winter season, with routes spanning from Australia and the Middle East to North America and Asia.

Finnair Launches Helsinki-Melbourne via Bangkok with Fifth-Freedom Rights

Finnair will begin daily Airbus A350 flights between Helsinki Airport and Melbourne Airport via Bangkok Suvarnabhumi Airport on Oct. 25, with the first departure from Melbourne scheduled for Oct. 26. The airline holds fifth-freedom rights on the Bangkok-Melbourne sector, allowing passengers to book travel on either segment independently. This new link permits connections from Melbourne to around 90 European destinations via Helsinki, positioning Finnair among a select

few European carriers operating own-aircraft services to Australia.

Western Sydney International Airport Opens with Jetstar and Air New Zealand Services

Jetstar will conduct the inaugural passenger flight from Western Sydney International Airport (WSI) on Oct. 25, flying to Gold Coast Airport using an A320 aircraft. Jetstar’s WSI network will include up to 14 weekly flights to Melbourne, four to Gold Coast, and three to Brisbane. Unlike Sydney Kingsford Smith International Airport, WSI operates without a nighttime curfew and primarily services Sydney’s western suburbs. Air New Zealand will begin thrice-weekly Auckland flights from WSI with A320 and A321 aircraft on Oct. 26, while maintaining existing services at Kingsford Smith Airport, enabling travelers access

to two Sydney gateways.

Etihad Airways Expands Middle East Network with New Saudi, Luxembourg, and Canada Routes

Etihad Airways will launch several new services in October. The airline will start weekly A320 flights from Abu Dhabi’s Zayed International Airport to Saudi Arabia’s Red Sea International Airport on Oct. 4, expanding to twice weekly from Oct. 25. This route serves a growing tourism area on Saudi Arabia’s northwest coast and becomes Etihad’s sixth destination in the country. Additionally, Etihad will introduce 4 weekly A321neo flights from Abu Dhabi to Luxembourg, marking the first Middle Eastern carrier to serve that airport and targeting passengers from neighboring Belgium, France, and Germany. On Oct. 25, Etihad will

begin a 4 times weekly nonstop service between Abu Dhabi and Calgary International Airport using Boeing 787-9 aircraft, establishing the first direct connection between the Middle East and Western Canada following a bilateral agreement expanding weekly frequencies between Canada and the UAE.

European and UK Long-Haul Route Restarts by Lufthansa, Swiss, and British Airways

Lufthansa will resume year-round, five weekly Boeing 787-9 flights from Frankfurt Airport to Kuala Lumpur International Airport starting Oct. 25. Swiss International Air Lines will enter the Bengaluru market with five weekly flights from Zurich at the commencement of the 2026-27 northern winter season. Bengaluru becomes Swiss’s third destination in India. British Airways plans to restart London Gatwick

to Colombo Bandaranaike International Airport flights three times weekly from Oct. 23 using Boeing 777 aircraft, marking a return to Sri Lanka after 11 years. Market data indicate roughly 452,000 two-way UK-Sri Lanka passengers in 2025, with many connecting via Middle Eastern hubs.

United, American, and Air Canada Expand North American and Asian Connections

United Airlines will resume daily Boeing 787-8 flights from Chicago O’Hare to Tokyo Narita Airport from Oct. 24, continuing existing Chicago-Haneda services. American Airlines will launch daily Chicago Narita 787-9 flights starting March 27, 2027, entering the same market. Air Canada will introduce two new routes to Tenerife South Airport using the A321XLR aircraft: twice-weekly Toronto Pearson

flights from Oct. 25 and weekly Montreal flights beginning Oct. 31. These will be the only nonstop connections between North America and the Canary Islands.

Delta Air Lines Plans US-Saudi Arabia Route Between Atlanta and Riyadh

Delta Air Lines is scheduled to start flights on Oct. 23 from Atlanta Airport to Riyadh Airport. The launch features daily Airbus A350-900 service in the first week before moving to thrice-weekly frequencies. This will be Delta’s first service to Saudi Arabia and the first nonstop route between the U.S. and Riyadh operated by an American airline, pending confirmation amid regional uncertainties.

Expanding Connectivity with New Fleet and Frequencies

The October 2026 route launches involve a variety of aircraft, including Finnair’s Airbus

A350, Etihad’s A320, A321neo, and Boeing 787-9, Lufthansa’s 787-9, British Airways’ 777, United’s 787-8, American’s 787-9, Air Canada’s new A321XLR, and Delta’s A350-900. These new services provide travelers with expanded options for intercontinental travel connecting Europe with Australia, Asia, the Middle East, and North America. The start of the northern winter season traditionally spurs such changes, resulting in increased frequencies and new gateways like Western Sydney International Airport with extended operational hours due to the absence of a nighttime curfew.
