The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) initiated the deployment of the V-Pass biometric facial recognition system at domestic airports across Nigeria starting July 2026. Developed in partnership with Verxid Technologies Limited, the system aims to accelerate and secure identity verification for passengers traveling on domestic flights.
Biometric Verification Process Details
V-Pass enrolls Nigerian passengers by capturing facial biometrics linked to their National Identification Number (NIN), while foreign travelers register using international passports processed via Optical Character Recognition (OCR) combined with biometric authentication. The system requires passengers to complete a one-time registration to receive a secure digital identity.
Verification occurs twice for each journey:
once prior to entering restricted airport areas and again before boarding the aircraft. This dual-check mechanism is designed to prevent identity fraud, impersonation, and unauthorized access, enhancing confidence among airport security agencies in passenger authentication.
Passenger Experience Enhancements
Following enrollment, biometric verification takes less than 30 seconds per passenger. The initial registration process requires approximately one minute. Travellers can use self-service kiosks for enrolment and verification or opt for FAAN staff assistance during the rollout phase.
Electronic gates (E-Gates) will control access to restricted areas, automating processes that reduce queues and improve passenger flow within domestic airports. The system’s implementation is projected to
speed up check-ins and boarding, making domestic air travel more efficient.
Data Management and System Integration
The V-Pass system complies with the Nigeria Data Protection Regulation (NDPR), with safeguards ensuring passenger data is not stored on kiosks or handheld devices. FAAN will operate a Central Management System that monitors passenger movements, produces analytics, and facilitates integration with other airport operating systems.
Airlines gain secure digital access to live flight schedules, passenger manifests, and boarding statistics via V-Pass’s digital platform, supporting operational coordination and enhanced passenger facilitation.
FAAN’s Strategic Objectives and Public Communication
Ms. Adebola, FAAN’s Director of Commercial and Business Development, confirmed that the biometric initiative reflects the authority’s commitment to
leveraging technology for improved passenger facilitation and strengthened domestic aviation security. Additionally, Henry Agbebire, FAAN’s Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, provided insight into the system’s features and rollout strategy in a public statement.
Prior to full implementation, FAAN and Verxid Technologies plan a nationwide sensitization campaign via television, radio, social media, airport announcements, and airline advisories. A live Proof of Concept demonstration and technical site assessment will precede the complete system deployment.

The introduction of V-Pass forms part of FAAN’s broader digital transformation agenda aimed at modernizing domestic airport operations. By adopting biometric facial recognition technology, FAAN seeks
to build a safer, more secure, and more efficient environment for domestic air travelers. This move replaces reliance on physical identification documents and manual checks, aligning Nigeria’s aviation security efforts with global biometric technology trends.
