The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) is introducing V-Pass, a biometric facial recognition identity verification technology to enhance security and speed at domestic airports nationwide. The system aims to reduce dependence on physical identification documents to create a safer and more efficient air travel environment.
Passenger Enrolment Using National IDs and Passports
The V-Pass system enables travellers to establish a secure digital identity through a one-time enrolment. Nigerian passengers will register using their National Identification Number (NIN) combined with facial biometric data. Foreign passengers will enrol via international passports through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) alongside biometric authentication. This dual-enrolment approach allows for comprehensive identity verification before
granting access.
Streamlined Passenger Processing and Dual Verification
After enrolment, passengers will confirm their identities twice—for entry into restricted airport zones and prior to boarding. Users may authenticate themselves at self-service kiosks or receive support from FAAN staff. E-Gates will automate access control to expedite flows and reduce queues. Biometric verification is designed to take less than 30 seconds once enrolled, with initial registration requiring about one minute.
Data Privacy and Centralised Management
FAAN and technology partner Verxid Technologies Limited have integrated data privacy as a core principle, ensuring full compliance with the Nigeria Data Protection Regulation. Passenger data will not be stored locally on kiosks or handheld devices. Instead, a
Central Management System will monitor passenger movement, produce analytics, and facilitate future integration with other airport technologies. Airlines will gain secure access to flight and passenger information, including manifest and boarding data.
Pre-Deployment Awareness and Testing
Prior to full deployment, FAAN and Verxid plan to conduct a nationwide sensitisation campaign using television, radio, social media, airport announcements, and airline advisories. A live Proof of Concept demonstration and technical site assessments will take place to evaluate effectiveness before the system goes fully operational.
FAAN’s Commitment to Digital Transformation
FAAN’s Director of Commercial and Business Development, Ms Adebola, indicated the V-Pass initiative highlights the authority’s dedication to harnessing technology to elevate
passenger facilitation and security at domestic airports. The rollout forms part of a broader digital transformation strategy aimed at building smarter, safer, and more efficient airport operations in Nigeria.
