The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) will start deploying the V-Pass biometric facial recognition identity verification system at domestic airports nationwide in July 2026. The new system aims to streamline passenger screening, improve aviation security, and reduce dependence on physical identification documents.
Facial Biometric Enrollment for Nigerian and Foreign Passengers
Nigerian travellers will register on the V-Pass platform using their National Identification Number (NIN) along with facial biometric capture. Foreign passengers will enroll using their international passports, which will be processed through optical character recognition (OCR) technology combined with biometric authentication.
Dual Identity Verification and Automated Access Control
The V-Pass system will verify passengers twice—prior to entry into restricted airport areas and again before
boarding flights—to prevent impersonation, unauthorized access, and identity fraud. The rollout will feature self-service kiosks and on-site assistance from FAAN personnel. Electronic gates (E-Gates) will enable automated access to controlled zones, cutting queues and improving passenger flow.
Biometric Processing Times and Digital Platform Capabilities
After initial enrollment, biometric verification is expected to take less than 30 seconds, while the first-time registration process will take approximately one minute. Airlines will receive secure access via a digital platform to flight schedules, passenger manifests, and boarding statistics. FAAN’s Central Management System will track passenger movement, analyze data, and support future integration with other airport systems.
Data Privacy, Sensitisation Campaign, and Official Commitment
FAAN and Verxid Technologies Limited
have confirmed that the V-Pass system complies with the Nigeria Data Protection Regulation (NDPR). Passenger data will not be stored on kiosks or handheld devices. A nationwide sensitisation campaign will be conducted before full deployment, utilizing television, radio, social media, airport announcements, and airline advisories. A live Proof of Concept demonstration and technical site assessment will precede the full rollout.

Domestic air travelers in Nigeria can expect faster security verification with the V-Pass
biometric system, which reduces the reliance on physical identification documents. Automated E-Gates will minimize queues at security and boarding checkpoints, ensuring smoother passenger processing. The system’s one-time enrollment will create a secure digital identity for each traveller.
