The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) unveiled the V-Pass biometric identity verification system for domestic air travel set to launch in July 2026. The system employs facial recognition technology to confirm passenger identities, aiming to accelerate processing time and boost security across multiple Nigerian airports.
Passenger Enrollment and Verification Process
Nigerian travelers will register for V-Pass using their National Identification Number (NIN) alongside facial biometric data capture. Foreign passengers will enroll through scanning their international passports with Optical Character Recognition (OCR) technology combined with biometric authentication. The system will verify passengers twice: before accessing restricted airport zones and prior to boarding aircraft.
Biometric Verification Implementation and Passenger Flow
Verification through
the V-Pass platform is designed to take less than 30 seconds for enrolled users, while new registrants can complete enrollment in approximately one minute. During rollout, passengers may utilize self-service kiosks or receive support from FAAN staff. The installation of electronic gates (E-Gates) will automate access to secure areas, aiming to reduce queue times and improve passenger movement within airport terminals.
Data Privacy and System Security
The V-Pass system complies with Nigeria’s Data Protection Regulation (NDPR) to ensure passenger data privacy. Passenger information will not be stored on kiosks or handheld devices. The platform includes a Central Management System that tracks passenger movements, produces analytics,
and supports integration with future airport technologies to maintain stringent security protocols and prevent identity fraud.
Collaboration and Rollout Preparations
FAAN developed V-Pass in partnership with Verxid Technologies Limited as part of its broader digital transformation initiative for domestic airports. Ms Adebola, FAAN’s Director of Commercial and Business Development, said the project demonstrates FAAN’s commitment to leveraging technology to enhance passenger facilitation and strengthen aviation security. Prior to full deployment, a nationwide awareness campaign through media outlets and airport announcements will educate passengers on using the system. A live Proof of Concept demonstration and technical site assessments are also planned.
