The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has extended a ground stop at Newark Airport due to severe thunderstorms, maintaining the hold on flights until 10:15 p.m. on August 8, 2026. The weather conditions in the tri-state area, which includes New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut, have prompted this operational pause for safety.
FlightAware data confirms that as of 9:45 p.m., 930 flights have been canceled and more than 1,000 flights delayed across Newark, Kennedy (JFK), and LaGuardia airports. These figures reflect widespread impact across the major airports serving the tri-state region.
While ground stops at Kennedy and LaGuardia airports have been
lifted, residual delays remain. Additionally, New Jersey’s NJ Transit has suspended rail services due to the same severe thunderstorms affecting the region.
