The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) issued ground stops at Dallas Fort Worth (DFW) International Airport and Dallas Love Field Airport on the afternoon of July 16, 2026, due to thunderstorms impacting the North Texas region. These ground stops prevented flights bound for these airports from departing until the restrictions were lifted.

FAA lifted the ground stop at DFW Airport at 4:23 p.m. Central Daylight Time, while the stop at Dallas Love Field was lifted at 5:15 p.m. Flights experienced average departure delays of 90 minutes at DFW and 75 minutes at Love Field during the stoppage.

DFW International Airport serves

as the primary hub for American Airlines, which is based in Fort Worth. Dallas Love Field is the home base for Southwest Airlines, the dominant carrier at the airport operating 18 of its 20 gates. Both airports are critical aviation centers in North Texas, handling substantial commercial and private air traffic daily.

The ground stops directly impacted travelers by preventing flights destined for North Texas from taking off until the FAA lifted the advisories. The delays contributed to extended waiting times for departure at both airports, disrupting scheduling across the affected routes.

Ground stops create significant operational challenges in the

Dallas region because of the high volume of air traffic managed daily. The weather-induced restrictions on July 16 followed a similar disruption the previous day, marking consecutive days of weather-related impacts on airport operations.
