FAA lifts DFW ground stop; flights face ongoing delays due to thunderstorms

DFW Ground Stop Lifted; Night Flights May Experience Delays

A ground stop issued by the Federal Aviation Administration at Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport on September 10, 2026, was lifted before its scheduled end time of 6:45 p.m. local time. The advisory, which halted flights destined for North Texas from departing, was downgraded to a ground delay by 6:25 p.m.

The FAA reported that the ground delay averaged 78 minutes. Meanwhile, DFW itself experienced departure delays averaging 75 minutes as thunderstorms affected outbound flights. Dallas Love Field Airport, the base of Southwest Airlines, also saw departure delays that averaged 30 minutes but were increasing as the weather continued to impact

operations.

Ground stops and airline operations at DFW

DFW International serves as the main hub for American Airlines, making ground stops particularly disruptive at the airport. The delay of flights outbound and the initial ground stop constrained air traffic and directly affected the departure schedule of the carrier headquartered in Fort Worth. Dallas Love Field, Southwest Airlines’ home airport, also faced delays as thunderstorms moved through the region.

Flights bound for North Texas were held on the ground during the advisory, contributing to cascading delays. Passengers at both DFW and Dallas Love Field should expect delays to persist into the evening because of ongoing ground delays caused

by operational challenges and severe weather. Ground stops are a safety measure used to regulate airport traffic by preventing flights from departing when airspace or runway capacity is compromised.

Thunderstorms were a primary factor in the delay conditions at both airports, compounding the operational complexities that led the FAA to impose the ground stop and later switch to a ground delay during the recovery phase.
