The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) issued ground stops at 10 airports across the United States, including major New York-area hubs such as LaGuardia, JFK, and Newark, on September 3, 2026. The ground stops prevented all departures from these airports, marking a significant disruption in air traffic due to severe thunderstorms impacting the Northeastern U.S.

Delays and Disruptions at Key Northeast Airports

LaGuardia Airport experienced average ground delays of 45 minutes as the thunderstorms passed. Newark Airport faced longer delays, with peak average ground delays reaching two hours. Boston Logan Airport reported 19 flight delays, leading among U.S. airports affected by the storms. The multi-day storm system caused

persistent disruptions from September 1 through September 3, 2026.

Northeast Region Impacted by Severe Weather

Thunderstorms affected air traffic from New York to Boston, and from Philadelphia to Washington, D.C., resulting in airspace restrictions that impacted arrivals and departures in these areas. Ground-delay programs were active at Newark, JFK, and LaGuardia airports. The weather also disrupted operations beyond New York and Boston, affecting flights throughout the Northeast corridor.

Airline Responses and Cascading Effects

Major carriers issued travel waivers permitting passengers to change bookings without penalty amid cancellations and delays caused by the ground stops and weather constraints. The simultaneous ground stops at multiple major hubs led to stranded crews and aircraft,

prolonging delays even after the storms subsided.

Labor Day Weekend Travel and Rising Weather Challenges

The timing of the disruptions coincided with the Labor Day weekend, a period of typically high passenger volumes. Recent patterns of increasing severe thunderstorms in summer and early fall have compounded air traffic challenges on the East Coast, with the FAA noting ground stops are used for abrupt weather events when data is insufficient to implement full Ground Delay Programs.
