The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) imposed a ground stop at Houston’s Hobby Airport on September 3, 2026, starting at 3:45 p.m. and scheduled through 5 p.m., halting all departing flights there due to thunderstorms. Earlier in the day, a similar ground stop at Houston Bush Airport (George Bush Intercontinental Airport) was lifted around 2:15 p.m.

Thunderstorms from Tropical Depression Edouard Affect Houston

The ground stops were prompted by thunderstorms linked to the remnants of Tropical Depression Edouard moving across Texas. The National Weather Service forecasted scattered thunderstorms continuing throughout the afternoon in Houston with localized heavy rainfall and gusty winds as the primary weather threats.

Flight Delays and Suspensions at Houston Airports

The FAA’s

ground stops led to the suspension or delay of departing flights at both Houston airports. Flights at Hobby Airport were held starting at 3:45 p.m., and departures at Houston Bush Airport experienced delays earlier until the ground stop was cleared by 2:15 p.m.

The FAA issued the ground stops as part of air traffic management safety protocols to mitigate risks posed by severe weather conditions to flight operations at these busy Texas airports.
