The Federal Aviation Administration implemented a series of ground stops at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport on July 12, 2026, in response to thunderstorms affecting the region. The ground stop was initially scheduled to expire at 2:30 p.m., later extended until 4 p.m., and subsequently allowed to lapse. However, a renewed ground stop was reissued at 8:10 p.m. to remain in effect until 9 p.m.

By approximately 1 p.m. on July 12, more than 900 flight delays had been recorded at Atlanta’s airport. The average delay time was reported at 40 minutes, with some flights experiencing maximum delays of up to

75 minutes, according to the FAA.

Severe Weather Impact on Eastern Georgia

Severe thunderstorm warnings were active for several Georgia counties throughout the day. Habersham County was under a warning from 5:10 p.m. until 6:15 p.m., while Morgan, Newton, Oconee, and Walton counties had warnings lasting until 4:45 p.m. Eastern Georgia counties including Baker, Berrien, Brooks, Calhoun, Clay, and others were under a severe thunderstorm watch effective until 9 p.m. on July 12.

Forecast and Operational Outlook

Meteorologist Eboni Deon of Severe Weather Team 2 forecasted scattered or isolated severe storms for the Atlanta area during the afternoon of July 12. The FAA indicated a 30 to 60 percent chance

that the ground stop might be extended due to ongoing weather conditions.

The ground stops and severe weather collectively caused flight cancellations and delays at Hartsfield-Jackson, one of the world’s busiest airports, disrupting operations on July 12, 2026.
