Thunderstorms and Power Outages Affect Southeast Michigan
The National Weather Service reported that a cold front moving through Southeast Michigan brought showers and thunderstorms expected to become more widespread throughout the afternoon and night of August 22, 2026. The storms posed risks of isolated severe thunderstorms producing wind gusts
up to 60 mph. DTE Energy recorded more than 3,000 power outages in Southeast Michigan at 12:30 p.m. due to the storm conditions.
Flight Disruptions and Safety Measures
The FAA’s ground stop temporarily suspended flight departures at Detroit Metro Airport and delayed flights inbound from multiple U.S. regions and Canada until weather conditions improved. The agency stated on its website that the ground stop was necessary to manage air traffic congestion and maintain safety during the thunderstorms impacting the region.
