The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) implemented a series of ground stops at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport on July 12, 2026, triggered by thunderstorms in the region. The initial ground stop was set until 2:30 p.m. and later extended to 4 p.m. before being lifted. A subsequent ground stop was reissued from 8:10 p.m. to 9 p.m.
Flight Delays and Severe Weather Warnings Across Eastern Georgia
More than 900 flights faced delays as of approximately 1 p.m., with an average delay duration of 40 minutes and maximum delays reaching 75 minutes. Severe thunderstorm warnings were active in Habersham County until 6:15 p.m., and in Morgan, Newton, Oconee, and Walton Counties
until 4:45 p.m. Additionally, a severe thunderstorm watch affected the eastern portion of the viewing area—including Baker, Berrien, Brooks, Calhoun, Clay, Colquitt, Cook, Decatur, Dougherty, Early, Grady, Lanier, Lee, Lowndes, Miller, Mitchell, Quitman, Randolph, Seminole, Terrell, Thomas, Tift, and Worth counties—until 9 p.m.
Meteorological Conditions and Operational Impact
Severe Weather Team 2 Meteorologist Eboni Deon forecasted a chance of scattered or isolated severe storms during the afternoon hours of July 12. These conditions prompted the FAA to manage air traffic by enforcing ground stops for safety. The FAA noted a 30 to 60 percent probability that the ground stop could be extended during the day.
Flight operations were temporarily halted during the periods of the ground stop, leading to widespread delays at the airport.
