The FAA is enforcing flight delays and ground stops on July 18, 2026, at major New York area airports including John F. Kennedy International Airport, LaGuardia Airport, Newark Liberty International Airport, and Philadelphia International Airport. These measures respond to severe weather conditions combined with staffing shortages of air traffic controllers managing the region’s airports.

More than 500 flights have been cancelled and approximately 4,000 flights delayed in the New York metropolitan area as a result of FAA restrictions. Ground stops hold some or all flights at their origin airports, preventing departures until the restrictions ease. Ground delays assign specific takeoff

times to flights bound for these airports to reduce congestion and evenly space arrivals.

Ground stops and delays are traffic management tools used by the FAA to avoid airspace bottlenecks by restricting inbound flight capacity. These controls reduce the need for airborne holding patterns by controlling the flow of arriving aircraft on the ground, ensuring safer and more orderly air traffic at congested airports such as JFK, LaGuardia, Newark, and Philadelphia.

Passengers flying into any of these airports on July 18 should expect intermittent delays and potential cancellations throughout the day and evening. Flight status is subject to ongoing change

and can be monitored on official FAA and flight tracking websites to obtain timely updates.
