Meteorologist Becca Schuman of the FAA Weather Squad detailed that areas including central Nebraska and St. Louis face the possibility of “some stronger thunderstorms” capable of causing travel disruptions. Parts of the Midwest and High Plains remain under a marginal weather risk on August 13, 2026, with ongoing thunderstorms expected to contribute to delays.
Schuman indicated that while “severe
risk isn’t as high” in these regions, the combination of storms and showers may still impact flight operations and schedules.
Forecast Through August 15 Signals Continued Showers Across Key Cities
Rain and scattered showers are forecast for Friday, August 14, affecting cities such as Minneapolis, Denver, and Kansas City. These conditions could interfere with travel plans and result in additional delays. The Midwest is expected to experience ongoing precipitation into Saturday, especially near Fargo, North Dakota, and Denver.
Minneapolis remains under the threat of scattered showers on August 15, though Schuman stated that by the weekend’s end, “many of us will be dry,” with only a few showers and reduced
severe weather risk.
FAA Advises Travelers to Monitor Flight Status and Airspace Updates
The FAA has urged passengers to check directly with their airlines for the latest flight information amid the weather-driven disruptions. Travelers are also encouraged to consult the FAA’s National Airspace System Status page for real-time details on ground stops, ground delays, and airport closures.
Flight operations at major New York City-area airports including John F. Kennedy, Newark, and LaGuardia are experiencing notable disruptions on August 13, attributed to the prevailing weather conditions and consequent ground stops.

travel delays.” She also noted, “Severe risk isn’t as high” but showers could still affect travel Friday evening. Regarding the weekend outlook, Schuman added, “But talking about the end of the weekend, if you’re returning from any travel plans, many of us will be dry. Still seeing a few scattered showers, but again, severe risk is not as high towards the end of the weekend.”
