A Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) equipment outage at the Minneapolis Air Route Traffic Control Center caused widespread flight disruptions across the Midwest on August 6, 2026. The regional outage, which began at approximately 2:30 p.m. local time, led to a ground stop at Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport (MSP) affecting hundreds of flights.
Flight Disruptions Across Midwest Airports Including MSP and Eppley Airfield
The outage impacted air traffic control systems and radar, forcing MSP to halt all departures and restrict arrivals for nearly two hours. Flights from multiple Midwestern states, including Nebraska, Iowa, Michigan, Kansas, Missouri, North Dakota, South Dakota, and Wisconsin, were either delayed, diverted, or held in flight paths
during the disruption. Omaha’s Eppley Airfield in Nebraska also experienced numerous arrivals and departures affected by the outage. At 4:45 p.m., the MSP website reported 87 delayed departures following the lifting of the ground stop.
Telecommunication Issues Cause FAA Equipment Failure; Investigation Underway
The FAA attributed the outage to telecommunication problems affecting its radar and air traffic control systems at the Minneapolis control center, which manages a 333,000-square-mile airspace. An FAA spokesperson confirmed flights entering and leaving the control center’s airspace were paused but stated services were fully restored by 4 p.m. The agency is investigating the precise cause of the equipment failure while continuing operations as normal.
Passenger Delays, Flight Rerouting, and Onboard Holding Patterns
Passengers experienced extended delays and rerouted flights due to the FAA system outage. Sierra Maatta, a passenger on an inbound flight from Dublin, reported her flight was delayed nearly an hour and diverted temporarily to Pittsburgh before returning to MSP. She described the increased delay from 1.5 to 3 hours, noting passengers onboard coped by watching movies during the hold. Ground stops halted all departures at MSP, and some inbound flights faced holding patterns or diversions.
FAA Technology Outdated Amid Ongoing Modernization Efforts
Paul Jackson, a retired airline pilot, described the FAA’s air traffic control equipment as “very, very old and very, very out of date in
many cases.” He commended air traffic controllers who operate the antiquated systems daily. Jackson noted the timing of the outage coincided with ongoing comprehensive efforts by the FAA to overhaul and modernize its air traffic control infrastructure, calling the upgrades “well overdue.”
Concurrent Local Internet and Travel Information Disruptions
Alongside the FAA outage, several neighboring Minnesota communities reported internet failures affecting the state’s 511 travel information system and other government websites. Officials confirmed no known connection between these service disruptions and the FAA equipment failure. Air traffic services resumed fully after about 90 minutes, with airlines at MSP and surrounding airports returning to normal flight operations.
