The FAA held 18 airports across the United States under 22 delay programs on September 10, 2026, as tracked by travelandtournews.com. Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport (DFW) was the worst-hit, with delay programs related to thunderstorms lasting 1 hour and 40 minutes and peak delays recorded by general arrival/departure delay information of up to 90 minutes.

Airports and Their Delay Programs

The delay programs spanned three types: 4 Ground Stop Programs, which hold departures at their origin airports to limit arrivals; 4 Ground Delay Programs that meter arrivals by assigning later departure times; and 14 General Arrival/Departure Delay Information programs providing ongoing delay data.

Dallas/Fort Worth International (DFW) had a Ground Stop Program due to thunderstorms from 21:00 to 22:40 UTC, lasting 1 hour 40 minutes, without recorded average or maximum delay minutes during that stop. Separately, DFW had general delay info from 20:40 to 22:40 UTC with peak average delays of 76 minutes and maximum delays of 90 minutes attributed

to thunderstorms.

Miami International (MIA) experienced the longest Ground Delay Programs lasting 22 hours and 40 minutes, from midnight to 22:40 UTC, due to disabled aircraft on the runway combined with thunderstorms. Peak average delay reached 218 minutes with a peak max delay of 572 minutes. MIA also had a 40-minute Ground Stop Program at 17:00–17:40 UTC due to thunderstorms and a general delay program related to a disabled aircraft on the runway from 17:20 to 17:40 UTC with peak average delays of 16 minutes.

Boston Logan International (BOS) ran a Ground Delay Program linked to runway construction lasting 10

hours 40 minutes, from 12:00 to 22:40 UTC, with peak average and maximum delays of 64 and 151 minutes respectively. Seattle-Tacoma International (SEA) had a general delay program lasting 2 hours 20 minutes for compacted demand causing up to 30 minutes delay.

Other airports with Ground Stop Programs included Austin (AUS) for runway construction (40 minutes), George Bush Intercontinental (IAH) and Miami (MIA) for thunderstorms. Ground Delay Programs also affected Newark Liberty (EWR) for unspecified reasons, and Vancouver (YVR) for runway maintenance lasting 4 hours 40 minutes with peak delays of 27 minutes average and 55 minutes maximum.

The remaining

airports had general delay information programs lasting mostly between 20 minutes to several hours. Causes included VIP movements, weather-related initiatives, survey work, and compacted traffic demand.

Thunderstorms and Runway Issues Drove Most Delays

The FAA cited thunderstorms as the leading cause behind 26 delay programs. Runway construction followed closely with 25 programs, and disabled aircraft on the runway accounted for 19. Runway maintenance and compacted demand each contributed to 15 programs.

Thunderstorms triggered all Ground Stop Programs except for one at Austin due to runway construction and led to extensive Ground Delay Programs, notably in Miami and Dallas/Fort Worth. Runway construction caused prolonged delays mainly in Boston

and San Francisco.

Airport Delay Situation Compared to Previous Days

The number of airports affected nearly doubled from 9 the previous day to 18, and total delay programs increased from 10 to 22, according to travelandtournews.com’s tracking of FAA data. The current affected airport count slightly exceeds the recent 7-day average of 16 airports, while total programs are more than double the average of recent days.

Despite the increase in affected airports and programs, this day is not the highest in the tracking window.
