Dorset introduced a new 10-year tourism strategy on 27 July 2026 aimed at expanding its local tourism economy, currently valued at approximately £1.6 billion annually. The plan focuses on increasing international visitor numbers and addressing the region’s dependence on peak summer travel to strengthen economic returns year-round.
Visitor Numbers, Employment, and Seasonal Patterns
Dorset welcomes over 22 million visitors yearly, generating more than £1.66 billion in direct tourism spending. The sector supports close to 30,000 jobs, representing about 23,000 full-time equivalents and nearly 8% of total employment within the county. However, tourism revenue remains concentrated in peak months, with 36% of domestic overnight stays occurring in
July and August alone.
Local Visitor Economy Partnership Status and Strategy Goals
Since May 2025, Dorset has held accreditation as a Local Visitor Economy Partnership (LVEP) under VisitEngland following Dorset Council’s approval in July 2024. This association provides access to VisitEngland’s data, marketing resources, and expertise. The new strategy emphasizes expanding off-peak tourism, enhanced marketing efforts, and developing cultural programming during quieter periods. It targets two key year-round visitor segments: nature and culture enthusiasts, and those seeking active and mindful experiences.
International visitor markets prioritized include the Netherlands, Germany, neighboring European countries, and long-haul English-speaking destinations to boost visitor spending and diversify Dorset’s tourism base beyond UK domestic
travelers.
Dorset Council Review and Business Sentiment
The Dorset Council Cabinet is scheduled to review the 2026-2035 strategy on 28 July 2026. Recent industry surveys indicate that 60% of Dorset tourism businesses plan to invest and grow their operations, while 25% intend to maintain current performance. Conversely, 11% of tourism operators are considering downsizing, selling, or retiring within the next three years, reflecting ongoing business challenges in the sector.
Risks and Funding for Dorset Tourism
The strategic plan requires broad endorsement to maintain Dorset’s LVEP accreditation and continued support from VisitEngland. Without this endorsement, Dorset risks losing its official partnership status. The plan does not require additional Dorset Council resources and currently
lacks government funding allocations, posing potential challenges for implementation and sustainability of the outlined objectives.
