Dong Thap Province has set a target to welcome 50 million visitors during the 2026-2030 period, designating tourism as a primary driver for economic development in the region. This initiative aligns with projected average annual visitor growth of 9 percent over the same timeframe.
Tourism Development Strategy and Regional Cooperation
The province’s development plan emphasizes expanding key tourism sectors including ecotourism, orchard tourism, agricultural and rural tourism, cultural tourism, and wellness tourism combining healthcare and medical treatment. Dong Thap plans to develop historical heritage tours related to traditional education, focusing on preserving local cultural values and promoting community-based tourism.
Expanding regional collaboration is central to the
strategy, targeting partnerships with Mekong Delta provinces, the southeast region of Vietnam, Can Tho City, and neighboring localities. The province intends to leverage tourism corridors such as the Go Cong coastal area, Soai Rap area, and the Tien and Hau rivers to enhance its tourism offerings.
Visitor Growth and Economic Projections
By 2030, Dong Thap aims to host roughly six million international visitors, with their annual growth forecasted at 15 percent. The tourism sector is projected to generate revenue reaching VND 35 trillion (approximately USD 1.34 billion) with an expected 15 percent average annual increase.
The province plans to expand accommodation infrastructure to about 700
establishments comprising 15,000 rooms that meet tourism quality standards. Employment in tourism is predicted to grow to 60,000 workers, including 15,000 direct employees by the end of the period.
First Half 2026 Tourism Performance
The Dong Thap Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism reported that visitor arrivals in the first half of 2026 reached nearly 59 percent of the annual target, marking a 16 percent increase compared to the same period in 2025. International arrivals totaled approximately 350,000, increasing by 5.7 percent.
Tourism revenue for the same timeframe was estimated at VND 2.45 trillion (around USD 93.8 million), rising 7 percent and exceeding half-year objectives.
In the second quarter alone, roughly 1.75 million visitors contributed to tourism revenue of VND 915 billion (approximately USD 35 million).
