Disney Cruise Line officially named its new ship Disney Imagination, slated to begin sailing from Tokyo in spring 2029. This vessel marks the first Disney cruise ship to be based permanently in Japan, targeting the region’s cruise market with tailored offerings.
Disney Cruise Line Japan Partnership with Oriental Land Co.
Disney Imagination will operate under Disney Cruise Line Japan, a Disney-branded cruise business managed by Oriental Land Co., which also owns and operates Tokyo Disney Resort through a licensing agreement with Disney. This partnership leverages Oriental Land Co.’s existing experience managing Disney experiences in Japan to deliver localized cruise services.
Ship Specifications and Sister Ship Relationship
The ship will measure approximately 140,000 gross tons and
contain about 1,250 staterooms. It will be powered by liquefied natural gas (LNG). Disney Imagination is described as a sister ship to Disney Wish, reflecting a similar design and onboard experience framework.
Stern Design Featuring The Little Mermaid Characters
The ship’s stern will showcase Ariel and Sebastian from Disney’s The Little Mermaid, continuing Disney Cruise Line’s tradition of character sculptures adorning the backs of its ships. Ariel is depicted using a “dinglehopper” to form the ship’s name, a motif aligned with designs seen on Disney Wish and planned sister ships.
Tailored Onboard Experiences for Japanese Guests
Onboard offerings will include modifications of venues and experiences drawn from Disney Wish, customized to suit Japanese
guests’ preferences. These adaptations will encompass facilities, entertainment, and food and beverage options. The ship will provide Broadway-style shows, character encounters, dedicated spaces for children and teens, as well as adult-only areas.
Design and Construction
Walt Disney Imagineering is responsible for the ship’s design and themed experiences. Construction is underway at Meyer Werft in Papenburg, Germany, continuing the shipbuilder’s history of producing Disney Cruise Line vessels.
Impact on Japanese Cruise Market
Disney Imagination’s deployment will offer cruise travelers in Japan and surrounding regions access to a Disney cruise vessel homeported locally from 2029 onward. This is the first time Disney Cruise Line will have a ship operating year-round
from Tokyo, expanding cruise options for the Japanese market.
Industry Context of Japan-Focused Cruise Customization
Other cruise operators, such as Princess Cruises with its Diamond Princess, have incorporated features like Japanese-style baths and in-room tea sets to serve Japanese guests. Disney Imagination aims to build on Disney Cruise Line’s character and entertainment traditions while customizing its offerings specifically for Japan, though detailed amenities have yet to be disclosed.
