Boston Expands as a European Gateway with New Reykjavik and Venice Flights
With the addition of the Boston-Reykjavik route, Delta will offer 14 unique long-haul summer destinations from Boston, increasing its total international destinations there to 16. Boston is the closest U.S. hub to Europe for Delta and its largest base in the city, reinforcing its role as a key transatlantic gateway.
Starting May 7, 2027, Delta will
also introduce four-times-weekly nonstop service between Boston and Venice, Italy, operating through October 29. This Airbus A330-300 service will feature Delta One, Premium Select, Comfort, and Main cabins. Venice becomes Delta’s 13th long-haul summer destination from Boston and its 12th continental European destination, complementing Boston’s existing daily flights to Milan. This increase makes Boston a major hub for Italy travel, offering up to 17 peak-day U.S. departures to Italy and over 30,000 nonstop seats weekly.
Massport’s Executive Director of Aviation, Sharon Williams, expressed enthusiasm about the new Venice flights, citing Italy’s popularity among New England travelers and highlighting Delta’s continued
investment in Boston as a gateway.
Detroit Gains First-Ever Nonstop Service to Athens
Delta will introduce three-times-weekly nonstop flights between Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport and Athens starting June 8, 2027, through October 28. These flights, operated by Airbus A330-200 aircraft, will provide Delta One, Premium Select, Comfort, and Main cabin options.
Athens will become Delta’s 12th long-haul summer destination from Detroit and its seventh continental European destination served nonstop. Detroit will be Delta’s fourth U.S. gateway to Athens, connecting Southeast Michigan travelers to the Greek capital and over 40 domestic destinations via the Detroit hub.
Wayne County Airport Authority CEO Chad Newton welcomed the new service,
noting the impact on tourism, business, and cultural links between Southeast Michigan and Athens.
Austin and Additional European Routes Extend Travel Season
Starting March 27, 2027, Delta will launch daily nonstop service from Austin-Bergstrom International Airport to Paris-Charles de Gaulle Airport, its first nonstop flight connecting Austin to Paris. Operating on Airbus A330-900neo aircraft, this route will offer Delta One, Premium Select, Comfort, and Main cabins. The Austin-Paris service enables one-stop access to nearly 70 European, Indian, and African destinations through Delta’s partnership with Air France-KLM.
Delta is also extending its European travel season across multiple routes. Flights from Minneapolis-St. Paul and Detroit to Rome will resume in
early March, with Seattle-Rome starting in April. Earlier seasonal returns are planned for New York-JFK flights to Catania, Porto, Prague, and Copenhagen, as well as Boston and Seattle to Barcelona, and Atlanta to Edinburgh.
Several routes such as Detroit-Rome and New York-JFK-Copenhagen will operate daily when service resumes. Cincinnati-Paris will continue three times weekly January through March 2027.
Delta’s Network Strategy and Customer Benefits
Delta’s Vice President of International Network Planning, Jeff Arinder, stated that customer demand for flexible, convenient, and diverse travel options to Europe drives the airline’s expansion. Adding new European routes from Detroit, Boston, and Austin, alongside service extensions, provides customers with increased
opportunities to travel when and how they choose.
Delta leverages partnerships with Air France, KLM, Virgin Atlantic, and others to offer access to hundreds of European destinations beyond its nonstop flights. The airline’s schedule changes in 2027 reflect a strategic extension of the transatlantic season to capture more demand in spring, summer, and fall months.
