CRRC Zhuzhou Electric Locomotive has delivered the initial batch of seven three-car trainsets for Shanghai Metro’s upcoming Line 22, scheduled to begin operation by the end of 2026. A total of 40 trainsets have been ordered for this route.
All trainsets are powered and incorporate silicon carbide auxiliary converters and oil-free air compressors, technologies that enhance energy efficiency and reduce maintenance needs. The trains support GoA4 unattended automated operation with a maximum speed of 120 km/h.
Trainsets for Line 22 feature automatic coupling and uncoupling capabilities, allowing operational adjustment of train length to match passenger demand. Their exterior and interior
designs draw from Chongming Island’s natural scenery and Chinese cultural elements, including motifs inspired by terraced fields and reed beds.
Line 22 Route and Infrastructure
Line 22, previously named the Chongming Line, will be 43 km long with eight stations along its route. It connects Jinji Road station in Pudong to Yu’an on Chongming Island via Changxing Island, featuring 41 km of underground track. The line will be Shanghai’s first metro route to cross the Yangtze River and will include the longest river crossing within a Chinese metro network.
Contract and Operational Context
This order represents the first Shanghai Metro rolling stock contract to include a long-term maintenance agreement.
The delivery and advanced technologies mark a key step in expanding urban transit in Shanghai, especially introducing cross-river metro service that strengthens city connectivity.
