In mid-July 2026, a crew member from the Princess Cruises ship Regal Princess fell overboard while the vessel was sailing off Mexico’s Caribbean coast. The ship had departed Port Everglades in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, on a Saturday for a seven-day Western Caribbean itinerary that included stops in Mexico, Belize, and Honduras. The crew member was initially reported missing during the voyage, prompting emergency response measures.
Search and Rescue Operations
Following the overboard incident, the Regal Princess initiated a search-and-rescue operation that lasted for more than eight hours. The effort involved the cruise ship itself, an additional cruise ship, and Mexican maritime authorities working together
to locate the crew member. According to passenger David Jimenez, the vessel slowed down and made repeated circular patterns in the search area. Despite the extensive measures, Princess Cruises confirmed the crew member had perished.
Throughout the search, Princess Cruises kept passengers informed with hourly updates and provided onboard counseling services to those affected. Jimenez noted that no identifying details about the crew member were shared with passengers during the notifications.
Official Response and Cruise Schedule Impact
Princess Cruises issued a statement expressing their condolences to the crew member’s family and all affected by the tragedy. The line also confirmed support was being offered to the
onboard team during the difficult time. The ship canceled its planned port call at Cozumel, Mexico, due to the incident and ongoing search activities.
Passenger David Jimenez described the event as unprecedented in his experience with cruises, highlighting the rarity of such a fatal overboard occurrence on the Regal Princess during its Western Caribbean itinerary.
