A 51-year-old female passenger aboard the Bahamian-flagged Carnival Luminosa cruise ship was medically evacuated approximately 45 miles offshore Humboldt Bay, California, after showing symptoms consistent with a stroke. The U.S. Coast Guard responded to the medical emergency on July 16, 2026.
The evacuation was conducted by a U.S. Coast Guard MH-65 Dolphin helicopter from Coast Guard Air Station Humboldt Bay. The helicopter crew hoisted the passenger from the cruise ship in challenging weather, facing winds around 40 mph and seas 8 to 10 feet tall. The patient was transported to Mendocino Coast Hospital in Fort Bragg, California for further medical
treatment.
Coast Guard watchstanders received the medical assistance request at about 5:10 p.m. on July 16, 2026 from a crew member aboard the Carnival Luminosa. Authorities later reported the woman was in stable condition. After the medical evacuation, the Carnival Luminosa resumed its scheduled itinerary.
