
Chinese tourist arrivals in Japan decreased by 56.3 percent year-on-year during the first seven months of 2026, according to data from the Japan National Tourism Organization. In July 2026 alone, arrivals from mainland China declined 56.1 percent compared to the same month the previous year.
Eight Consecutive Months of Decline in Chinese Arrivals
This marks the eighth consecutive month of year-on-year drops in Chinese visitor numbers to Japan, reflecting a sustained downward trend starting early in 2026. The consistent decline has significantly reduced the presence of Chinese tourists in Japan’s inbound travel market.

The sharp fall in arrivals has been linked to strained relations between China and Japan
following controversial remarks about China made by Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi. These geopolitical tensions have contributed to a deterioration in travel flows between the two countries.
Decline in Chinese Share of Japan’s Foreign Tourists
From January to July 2026, Chinese tourists accounted for 10.1 percent of all foreign visitors to Japan, down from 22.8 percent during the same period in 2025. The halving of their share underscores the severity of the decline and presents challenges for Japan’s tourism sector amid geopolitical and travel-related restrictions.
