Carnival Cruise Line has officially named its new ship Carnival Destiny, marking the start of construction in July 2026 at Fincantieri’s Monfalcone shipyard in Italy. The Carnival Destiny will be the company’s largest vessel, exceeding 200,000 gross tons and designed to accommodate more than 8,000 passengers at full capacity. This vessel is the first in Carnival Cruise Line’s newly announced Ace class.
Design Focuses on Ocean-Facing Features and New Guest Concepts
The Carnival Destiny will offer an increased number of ocean-view balcony cabins to maximize passenger access to ocean vistas. The ship incorporates a reimagined lanai deck and features 4.5 acres of glass, including multi-story glass walls, aimed at
enhancing ocean connectivity for guests. Over 70% of the ship’s dining venues, bars, lounges, entertainment options, and attractions are planned to be completely new concepts, distinct from prior fleet offerings.
Legacy of Original Carnival Destiny and Fleet Expansion Plans
The name Carnival Destiny pays homage to the original vessel of the same name, which debuted in 1996 as the world’s first cruise ship over 100,000 gross tons and was 30% larger than competitors at the time. That original ship, also built by Fincantieri, was rebranded in 2013 as the Carnival Sunshine after refurbishment and remains in service. Fincantieri has delivered 76 ships to Carnival Corporation’s portfolio, which includes eight
cruise lines, over the past 30 years. Carnival Corporation plans to expand its fleet to 30 ships by 2027.
Itineraries Covering Caribbean, Bahamas, and Mexico; Carnival Festivale to Precede Destiny
Carnival Destiny’s initial itineraries will focus on destinations within the Paradise Collection, covering Caribbean ports, the Bahamas, and locations in Mexico such as Celebration Key and RelaxAway, as well as Half Moon Cay. Prior to Carnival Destiny’s 2029 launch, Carnival’s Excel-class ship Carnival Festivale will enter service at Port Canaveral as the cruise line’s largest ship until Destiny debuts.
Christine Duffy, President of Carnival Cruise Line, stated that the Carnival Destiny “builds on a legacy that changed cruising once before, reimagining
what guests can experience at sea.” She added, “With this ship, we’re elevating the guest experience again, creating a ship that feels more expansive, while helping guests feel more connected and ultimately have more fun.” The ship aims to create a more outward-facing guest experience through its design and amenities.
