Armenia received 1.042 million tourist visits during the first half of 2026, setting a new record for the country in that period, Economy Minister Gevorg Papoyan confirmed. The government aims to reach 2.2 million visits by the year’s end, reflecting continued sector expansion.
Visitor Origins and Air Connectivity
The largest proportion of tourists arriving in June 2026 were from Russia at 40%, followed by Georgia with 15% and Iran with 8%. This predominance is linked to geographic proximity, historical relations, shorter travel times, and established Armenian diasporas, according to Sona Hovhannisyan, Head of the Ministry of Economy’s Tourism Committee International Cooperation Department.
Inbound tourism growth
was notably boosted by increasing flights and visa facilitation. The launch of the Urumqi–Yerevan air route and visa-free travel for Chinese nationals resulted in a significant surge of visitors from China. Additionally, heightened flight frequencies stimulated arrivals from Italy, while new direct flights supported tourism increases from Germany and Kazakhstan. Recently inaugurated direct flights between London and Yerevan are expected to further enhance UK visitor numbers, although arrivals from India, the Philippines, and Egypt have declined.
Tourism Data and Season Expansion
Hovhannisyan clarified that tourism statistics cover only inbound visitors, excluding domestic travel by Armenian residents. The inbound data are compiled from border checkpoint records
and apply to non-residents staying at least one night without engaging in paid employment. Domestic tourism is surveyed separately by the Statistical Committee on a quarterly basis.
The Tourism Committee observed increasing activity extending beyond the traditional summer peak into the winter months. Hovhannisyan stated, “It is encouraging to see growing activity during the winter months as well,” adding that if high January figures become consistent, Armenia could offer active tourism nearly year-round.
Promotion and International Marketing
To sustain tourism growth, the Tourism Committee has intensified its international outreach. Dianna Karapetyan, Head of the Marketing and Promotion Department, reported Armenia’s participation in prominent 2026
tourism exhibitions across Spain, Germany, Romania, and Russia. The committee collaborates with global media, PR firms, bloggers, and influencers through familiarisation trips and promotional campaigns, enhancing Armenia’s visibility.
Karapetyan said, “Armenia has established itself in the global tourism market as a safe and secure destination.” The committee plans additional international events this year where Armenian companies will present the country’s cultural and touristic offerings.
Official Statements and Future Initiatives
Economy Minister Gevorg Papoyan confirmed the record-breaking first-half visitor number, while Sona Hovhannisyan emphasized active air connectivity as a critical factor driving inbound tourism. She also highlighted the methodological distinction between domestic and inbound tourism data
collection.
Karapetyan noted the importance of international cooperation through meetings between the Tourism Committee Chair and counterparts abroad to strengthen sector development. She revealed the committee is preparing a major new initiative, though details remain undisclosed.
