Armenia recorded a record 1.042 million tourist visits in the first half of 2026, Economy Minister Gevorg Papoyan reported. This is a 14.8% rise compared to January–June 2025, with the government targeting 2.2 million tourist visits by the end of 2026.

Key Source Markets and Visitor Distribution

Visitors from Russia made up about 40% of arrivals in June 2026, followed by Georgia with 15% and Iran with 8%. These markets are important due to Armenia’s geographic proximity, historical ties, and large Armenian diaspora communities.

New Air Routes and Visa Policies Driving Growth

Significant increases from China occurred after the launch of the Urumqi–Yerevan route and visa-free travel for Chinese nationals, according to Sona Hovhannisyan,

Head of International Cooperation Department, Tourism Committee of the Ministry of Economy. Increased flight frequencies boosted visitor numbers from Italy, while new direct flights raised arrivals from Germany and Kazakhstan. Direct flights recently started between London and Yerevan, supporting growth from the UK. Visitor numbers from Spain, the Czech Republic, and the Netherlands are also rising but remain modest.

Expansion Beyond Traditional Peak Seasons

Tourism in Armenia is expanding beyond summer, with growing autumn and winter activity. Hovhannisyan said, “It is encouraging to see growing activity during the winter months as well.” She added, “If the record figures registered this January become a lasting trend,

we will be able to say that Armenia offers active tourism almost all year round.” The tourism season is diversifying with more visitors throughout the year.

Marketing Efforts and Sector Development

The Tourism Committee increased international marketing efforts by participating in tourism exhibitions in Spain, Germany, Romania, and Russia in 2026. Dianna Karapetyan, Head of the Marketing and Promotion Department, confirmed ongoing collaborations with international media, PR agencies, bloggers, and influencers through familiarisation visits and promotional campaigns.

Karapetyan stated, “Armenia has established itself in the global tourism market as a safe and secure destination.” The Committee is preparing further major promotional initiatives and continues diplomatic

efforts to strengthen international cooperation in tourism.

Hovhannisyan explained that inbound tourism data includes non-resident visitors staying at least one night and excludes domestic tourism, which is reported quarterly by the Statistical Committee of Armenia. “Domestic and inbound tourism are different concepts, and the methodology used to collect data also differs,” she noted.
