Armenia registered 1.042 million inbound tourist visits during the first half of 2026, marking the highest number ever recorded for that period, according to Economy Minister Gevorg Papoyan. This figure reflects a 14.8% increase compared with the same timeframe in 2025. The government has set a target of reaching 2.2 million tourist visits by the end of 2026.

Tourist Origins and Data Collection Methodology

Visitors from Russia accounted for approximately 40% of arrivals in June 2026. Tourists from Georgia and Iran formed 15% and 8% shares respectively. Sona Hovhannisyan, Head of the International Cooperation Department at the Tourism Committee of the Ministry of Economy, clarified that

these figures pertain exclusively to inbound tourism, which differs from domestic tourism in both definition and data collection methodology. Inbound tourists are defined as non-residents who stay at least one night and do not engage in paid employment while in Armenia. Data on inbound tourism is derived solely from border checkpoint records, while domestic tourism statistics are compiled quarterly by Armenia’s Statistical Committee.

Growth Linked to Air Connectivity and Visa-Free Policies

Key factors driving the increase in foreign tourist arrivals include expanded direct air connections and visa policy facilitation. The launch of the Urumqi–Yerevan route and the introduction of visa-free travel for Chinese nationals have contributed to a

significant rise in visitors from China. Additionally, increased flight frequencies have supported growth from Italy, while new direct flights have boosted arrivals from Germany and Kazakhstan. The recent introduction of a London–Yerevan direct air link is expected to enhance tourist flows from the United Kingdom. Armenia is also experiencing growing interest from Spain, the Czech Republic, and the Netherlands, supported by ongoing air connectivity enhancements.

Expansion of Tourism Season and Changing Patterns

The traditional peak tourism period in Armenia spans from summer through October. However, tourism officials report growing activity in winter months. January 2026 set record figures indicating this seasonal extension. Sona Hovhannisyan noted, “If the

record figures registered this January become a lasting trend, we will be able to say that Armenia offers active tourism almost all year round.” The rise in winter tourism reflects diversification beyond the established summer-focused season.

International Promotion and Market Position

The Tourism Committee under the Ministry of Economy has expanded global marketing initiatives in 2026, participating in major tourism exhibitions in Spain, Germany, Romania, and Russia. Dianna Karapetyan, Head of the Marketing and Promotion Department of the Tourism Committee, emphasized Armenia’s developing reputation as a safe and secure destination. The committee coordinates with international media outlets, public relations agencies, bloggers, and influencers to host

familiarization visits and run promotional campaigns. These efforts have increased international media coverage and tourism sector visibility. Karapetyan also mentioned upcoming international events aimed at showcasing Armenia’s culture, cuisine, and attractions.

Official Outlook and Market Challenges

Official forecasts anticipate that Armenia will meet or surpass last year’s record of 2.2 million tourist visits by year-end 2026. The Tourism Committee is preparing further initiatives to sustain growth, although details remain undisclosed. Meanwhile, the country has observed declines in arrivals from India, the Philippines, and Egypt. Ongoing development of direct flight connections and visa facilitation remain central to Armenia’s strategy for broadening its international tourism base.
