Albania registered 5 million foreign tourist arrivals in the first half of 2026, a 6.2% increase over the 4.8 million visitors in the same period of 2025, according to INSTAT data reported by ALBANIA DAILY NEWS. Tourists from Southern Europe made up the largest share of arrivals at 71.9%, followed by Western Europe at 9.3%.
June 2026 Visitor Trends
In June 2026, Albania received 1.35 million foreign tourists, rising slightly from 1.33 million in June 2025. However, arrivals fell from several key markets in June, with decreases of 51,190 visitors from Kosova, 15,223 from North Macedonia, 13,165 from Germany, 11,062 from Turkey, and 6,212
from Montenegro. These five markets accounted for a total decline of 96,852 tourists, representing about a 13% contraction compared to June 2025.
Government Response to Market Fluctuations
Minister of Tourism, Culture, and Sports Blendi Gonxhja linked the decline in arrivals from these countries to ongoing protests that began on May 30, 2026, still continuing as of late July. He highlighted that the perception of security, normality, and stability is critical to tourism, and that the unrest and negative image reported abroad have impacted tourist decisions and confidence among international partners. Tourism operators reported slowdowns in bookings and cancellations in certain markets consistent with these trends.
Tourism Context and Population Data
Despite regional market declines, overall arrivals maintained modest growth due to increases from other countries, preserving a positive balance in foreign tourist numbers. Albania’s total foreign tourist arrivals grew 6.6% in 2025 to 12.47 million visitors. The country’s population was approximately 2.4 million in 2023, underscoring the significance of tourism to Albania’s economy and travel demand.
