Air Canada and Toronto Pearson International Airport have launched a pilot program featuring four biometric boarding gates to accelerate passenger processing. The pilot includes one domestic gate and three serving passengers traveling to the United States through Pearson’s transborder area.
Passenger Enrollment via Air Canada App and US Preclearance
Domestic passengers enroll in the biometric boarding process through the Air Canada mobile app before arriving at the gate. The system uses a live facial image captured by a camera and compares it to an approved traveler record maintained in Air Canada’s identity gallery. This verification replaces the final need to present a passport and boarding pass at the gate.
For passengers bound for the US, images are obtained during US preclearance at Toronto Pearson, allowing the three transborder gates to verify identities without separate prior registration.
Technology Providers and System Integration
The biometric gates are supplied by Dormakaba, while middleware software connecting the hardware to identity systems is provided by Airsphere and SITA. Air Canada manages the domestic enrollment software and maintains the identity gallery used for facial comparison. The integration enables the seamless replacement of traditional document checks during boarding.
Operational Details and Passenger Experience
Participation in the biometric boarding pilot is voluntary, with traditional passport and boarding pass presentation still available. Toronto Pearson is monitoring passenger enrollment
numbers, processing times, throughput, and customer satisfaction throughout the trial. Currently, the pilot focuses solely on biometric boarding procedures and does not extend to other airport processes.
Airport Modernization and Passenger Volume Growth
Toronto Pearson handles approximately 47 million passengers annually and expects this to rise to 65 million by the early 2030s. The biometric boarding pilot supports the airport’s broader modernization program aimed at using digital identity and automated processing technologies to manage increasing passenger volumes efficiently.
