At least 25 commercial flights across Europe were diverted or forced to make emergency landings on Thursday, 7 November 2026, following hoax bomb threats targeting aircraft. This disruption occurred two days after seven other flights were searched or diverted under similar circumstances.
Investigations Find No Explosives or Clear Hostile Coordination
Security investigations revealed no explosive devices in connection with the bomb threat allegations. Officials determined there was no direct evidence linking these multiple threats to coordinated terrorist organizations or specific state actors. Airlines treated the threats as credible, suggesting some level of coordination, although investigators have not ruled out individual perpetrators or criminal groups.
Cyberattacks Hit Refrigeration and Critical Infrastructure Across Europe
Alongside the flight disruptions,
cyber incidents targeted supermarket refrigeration systems and other critical infrastructure facilities in Belgium, Sweden, and the United Kingdom. Some attacks involved hackers manipulating thermostat settings to increase storage temperatures as high as 50 degrees Celsius. France’s national blood service also experienced a cyberattack that affected its cold-storage operations, raising concerns over essential public services.
Experts Highlight Evolving Hybrid Warfare and Security Environment
Dan Sabbagh, defense and security editor at The Guardian, emphasized that bomb threats to airlines occur daily but have gained new dimensions amid heightened state-linked activities. He remarked, “Airlines receive bomb threats on a daily basis, at a rate that we would find extraordinary if we
knew.” Sabbagh noted that current threats involve unconventional tactics reflecting a “different world with familiar uncertainties,” where terrorism aims primarily to instill fear rather than cause direct physical harm.
Dan Milmo, global technology editor at The Guardian, analyzed the cyberattacks on refrigeration systems near Heathrow Airport and categorized likely hackers as either criminal gangs or nation states, while also citing disruptive activity by young, inexperienced hackers. Milmo recalled that two members of the English-speaking hacking collective Scattered Spider were jailed in July 2026 after a cyberattack on Transport for London. Cybersecurity research associates these disruptions with actions linked to Russia.
Flight Delays and Heightened Security Measures Impact Passengers
The emergency landings and diversions caused delays and interruptions for affected flights across European airspace on 7 November 2026. Passengers on at least 25 flights faced security-related disruptions amid intensified airport screening and response protocols. Authorities continue to monitor evolving threats while maintaining increased vigilance at major European airports.
Since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, Europe has experienced a rise in sabotage incidents categorized as hybrid warfare. An alleged plot two months earlier targeted RAF Fairford and was linked to an individual acting on behalf of Iran. The Turing Institute is deploying artificial intelligence research to bolster security
and resilience of critical infrastructure systems against such challenges.
