Hamad International Airport and Qatar Airways launched a Biometric Fast Pass system in 2026, integrating biometric identification across more than 700 touchpoints within the airport to streamline passenger processing.

IATA 2026 Global Passenger Survey Shows Growing Biometric Usage and Satisfaction

The International Air Transport Association (IATA) released its 2026 Global Passenger Survey on October 28, gathering responses from over 10,000 travelers representing more than 200 countries. The percentage of passengers experiencing biometric procedures at airports increased to 58% in 2026, up from 50% in 2025. Passenger satisfaction with biometric experiences remained high at 87%. Additionally, 78% of respondents expressed willingness to share biometric information to avoid presenting passports and boarding passes

during security checks. Interest in digital travel documents expanded, with 84% of passengers favoring digital passports for online check-in, and 82% open to sharing digital travel IDs with airlines after booking to receive personalized services such as visa information.

IATA Calls for Government Coordination on Digital Travel Credentials

Nick Careen, IATA’s Senior Vice President for Operations, Safety and Security, emphasized the increasing passenger demand for biometric travel processes. He stated, “More passengers are experiencing biometrics during their travels. They like it and want more.” Careen highlighted that broader adoption of biometrics enhances journey smoothness and security, benefiting governments and airlines. He called for governments to establish a harmonized framework

for issuing and accepting secure digital passports—termed Digital Travel Credentials—to normalize biometric use in international travel. IATA’s membership includes over 370 airlines such as American Airlines, Delta Air Lines, Ryanair, United Airlines, and Lufthansa, representing a broad industry interest in advancing biometric travel solutions.

Traveler Impact and Opt-Out Policies in the United States

The Biometric Fast Pass system enables smoother and faster passenger processing at Hamad International Airport in 2026. Passengers willing to share biometric data can avoid showing physical passports and boarding passes during security screenings. In the United States, the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) allows travelers to decline facial recognition technology without causing delays. Similarly, U.S. Customs

and Border Protection (CBP) offers alternative processing for citizens opting out of facial photo capture, which involves manual travel document checks by officers.
