More than 1,331 flights within or departing from the United States experienced delays by 10 a.m. Eastern Standard Time on November 7, 2026, accompanied by 59 cancellations, according to flight tracking service FlightAware. Globally, the number of delayed flights passed 11,413, with 548 cancellations reported worldwide by that time.
Weather Causes Delays at Northeast and Washington Area Airports
The Federal Aviation Administration identified thunderstorms and low clouds as the primary causes of flight disruptions affecting Boston Logan International Airport (BOS), New York airports including John F. Kennedy International (JFK), LaGuardia (LGA), and Newark Liberty International (EWR), Philadelphia International Airport (PHL), as well as Washington, D.C. area airports—Ronald Reagan Washington
National (DCA), Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall (BWI), and Washington Dulles International (IAD). Additionally, low cloud ceilings were noted by the FAA to potentially disrupt operations at Charlotte Douglas International Airport (CLT).
Travel Advisories and Preparation for Disrupted Flights
Passengers were advised to monitor flight statuses closely through airline websites or mobile applications. Airlines recommend downloading their apps and activating notifications for real-time updates on gate changes, delays, or cancellations. Travelers with connections at busy airports were encouraged to allow extra time to mitigate missed connections. Carry-on bags should include essential items to stay accessible during extended waits, and passengers should review refund and rebooking policies before departing
for the airport.
Expert Guidance on Managing Flight Cancellations
Eryn Gordon, founder of Earth to Editorial and a TedX speaker on responsible travel, advised travelers experiencing cancellations to approach such incidents as logistical challenges instead of emergencies. Gordon emphasized, “A cancellation feels like chaos, but the travelers who come out of it best treat a disruption as a planning problem rather than an emergency. Screenshot the rebooking policy before you leave the house.” She cautioned against hastily accepting the first alternative seat offered, noting, “The trap is thinking speed is everything and grabbing the first seat offered, when that seat can strand you in a connecting
airport overnight with your bag on another aircraft.”
FlightAware continues to provide live updates of flight delay and cancellation data worldwide, with the November 7 disruptions reflecting ongoing challenges in air travel logistics during adverse weather conditions.
