Turkey’s tourism industry drew 49.1 million visitors from January through September 2026, generating £38.2 billion in revenue, according to data reported by Travel Weekly. Russia was the top source market with 5.70 million arrivals, followed by Germany with 5.17 million visitors, and the United Kingdom contributed 3.2 million visitors in the first nine months.

The summer quarter accounted for a record £19 billion in tourism income, representing a 5% increase compared to the same period in 2025. The average length of stay for all arrivals rose slightly by 0.3% to 10.34 nights, while average spending per night climbed 4.6% to

£80.20.

Travel Sector Challenges Amid Regional Instability

The sector faced multiple headwinds throughout 2026, including ongoing conflicts in the region surrounding Turkey, restrictions on airspace use, and increased energy and airfare prices. These factors have influenced travel decisions, constrained airline capacity, and disrupted tour operator schedules, creating significant obstacles for international tourism markets.

Turkey’s Culture and Tourism Ministry has noted the difficulty of operating under these conditions, which have led to disrupted connectivity and increased travel expenses across many routes servicing the country.

Steps to Strengthen Tourism Resilience

Since 2018, Turkish authorities have implemented strategic measures to strengthen the tourism sector’s resilience against geopolitical and economic crises. The establishment of the

Turkey Tourism Promotion and Development Agency (TGA) has institutionalized marketing efforts to make promotions more continuous and systematic.

Alongside these organizational reforms, Turkey has diversified its tourism offerings and broadened source markets to reduce dependency on a limited number of countries. These efforts have contributed to a more stable tourism performance despite external disruptions.

Official Perspective and Future Market Focus

Turkey’s Culture and Tourism Minister Mehmet Nuri Ersoy highlighted Turkey’s position as a stable destination in a volatile region. Minister Ersoy emphasized that the highest tourism revenues recorded in the third quarter and for the first nine months of 2026 demonstrate the effectiveness of resilience-enhancing policies

adopted since 2018.

The ministry plans to maintain its foothold in principal markets like Russia, Germany, and the UK, while increasing focus on emerging high-potential markets including the Americas, Canada, East Asia, Africa, and Oceania to further diversify visitor sources.
