Railway engineering work in the UK will cause 10 days of service disruptions over the Christmas period, with two major stations closed and several key routes affected nationwide.
Paddington and Birmingham Station Closures
London Paddington station will close for five days during the holiday season, impacting intercity trains to the west of England and Wales until January. The engineering project includes replacing a junction near Slough. Concurrently, Birmingham New Street station will shut from the start of Christmas Eve until December 29 to replace overhead power supplies. This closure prohibits all trains from stopping or passing through the station, with rail replacement buses operating to
serve Birmingham city centre.
Disruptions on East Coast, Great Eastern, and TransPennine Lines
The east coast mainline will experience partial closure on Christmas Eve, affecting routes between London, north-east England, and Scotland. Rail replacement buses will operate between Newark and York, adding approximately two hours to journey times due to work at Doncaster. Additionally, the Great Eastern mainline out of London Liverpool Street will close for 10 days starting Christmas Day for track replacement in east London. This closure suspends all Greater Anglia and Elizabeth line services through east London, eliminating direct trains from Norwich to London during the period. TransPennine services connecting Leeds and Manchester will be slowed
for six weeks beginning on Christmas Day due to the closure of Huddersfield station.
Passenger Impact and Service Adjustments
Passengers should expect significant disruptions and adjustments. Great Western services to Wales and the west of England will operate between Reading and their destinations from December 27 to January 4, with some trains rerouted via Oxford to London Euston. Elizabeth line services west of Paddington and Heathrow Express trains will remain suspended until December 31. Rail replacement buses will substitute for trains through Birmingham New Street, and travelers on east coast routes are advised to avoid travel on Christmas Eve due to added journey times. No
direct rail services will run from Norwich to London during the Great Eastern mainline closure.
Official Statements and Project Purpose
Network Rail’s group director and system operator emphasized that engineers coordinated with train operators to maintain services on the busiest travel days and provide alternatives where routes are affected. The planned £152 million engineering works are scheduled during the quieter Christmas period to improve railway reliability and increase capacity. Completion of power supply upgrades at Birmingham and Paddington stations necessitates their temporary closures, which are critical projects made feasible by low passenger volumes during the festive season.
Timing and Benefits of Christmas Period Works
Train services in the UK generally halt on
December 25 and 26, providing the optimal timeframe for major infrastructure projects. Network Rail noted that the days between Christmas and New Year are the quietest for rail travel and offer the best opportunity to complete essential upgrades. These works aim to enhance the overall reliability and capacity of the railway network, ensuring improved service beyond the holiday period.
