The U.S.-based luxury cruise ship MV Odyssey halted its ongoing global voyage while docked in Sihanoukville, Cambodia, forcing 203 passengers, mostly Americans, to disembark with no confirmed departure date as fuel costs surged.

Cruise Ship Details and Passenger Numbers

The MV Odyssey, operated by Florida’s Villa Vie Residences, has a maximum capacity of 650 passengers but carried 203 passengers and 156 crew members at the time of the suspension. The voyage began in Belfast, Northern Ireland, in October 2024 and was planned to last approximately 3.5 years, with a second cruise scheduled to conclude in August 2030.

Fuel Price Increases Linked to Iran War

Fuel costs aboard the ship skyrocketed due to interruptions

in petroleum supply caused by the war in Iran. Monthly fuel expenses per cabin, which historically averaged about $1,800, rose to an estimated $6,000 to $8,000 in parts of Asia. The crisis is tied to reduced traffic through the Strait of Hormuz and resulting regional fuel shortages affecting Southeast Asia.

Company Attempts and Official Statements on Suspension

Villa Vie Residences said it attempted to reduce fuel consumption by slowing the ship’s itinerary and increasing time spent in port but could not offset the increased costs. In a statement, the operator acknowledged it “has been unable to continue carrying the resulting operating losses” and characterized passing the full

cost increase to residents as unrealistic. The company announced efforts to support residents, crew, and employees while coordinating disembarkation and finding temporary accommodations.

Passenger Experiences and Disembarkation

Passengers were given seven hours’ notice to leave the ship on Tuesday. Many reported receiving minimal support from the operator and were compelled to arrange their own lodging and travel after disembarkation. Some passengers expressed frustration at repeated requests for additional funding to cover fuel costs and concerns about deteriorating onboard services. Crew members reportedly had not been paid during the crisis.

Retired passengers Paul and Lynn Montoya from Wyoming, who boarded 17 months ago in Panama

after purchasing a window cabin, criticized management for mismanaging finances despite the rising fuel costs. California passengers Carol Larson and Crystal Lavering, who lived onboard for 18 months, described the suspension as heartbreaking and expressed hope for a revival of the residential cruise concept.

Ship History and Local Official Comments

The MV Odyssey was built in 1993 and operated under several names and cruise lines before Villa Vie Residences acquired it in 2023. The residential cruise concept marketed lifetime cabin ownership starting around $230,000 as an alternative to conventional living.

Long Dimanche, deputy governor of Preah Sihanouk province, stated the ship arrived in Sihanoukville the previous

Friday and was expected to depart on Saturday, although the operator had not confirmed a departure date.

The ship remains docked at the port on the Gulf of Thailand with passengers stranded amid uncertainty about future operations.
