A ground delay program was active at Austin-Bergstrom International Airport on Friday, October 23, 2026, affecting all flights arriving from the contiguous United States between 11 a.m. and 9:30 p.m. The Federal Aviation Administration implemented this restriction to manage congestion caused by a surge in inbound air traffic.

FlightAware reported that by 1:45 p.m., 243 commercial flights scheduled through Austin were delayed. This included 131 arriving and 112 departing flights. The average delay for Austin-bound flights was 75 minutes, with some aircraft experiencing delays exceeding two hours.

Event-Driven Traffic Surge

The ground delay is driven primarily by the Formula One United States Grand

Prix weekend at Circuit of the Americas, anticipated to attract over 400,000 spectators. Additional air traffic pressure comes from sports events in the region, including the San Antonio Spurs and Houston Rockets game on Friday at Moody Center and the Texas Longhorns football game against Ole Miss on Saturday.

FAA Restrictions on General Aviation

Due to the unusually high number of private and general aviation flights into Austin during the race weekend, the FAA requires all general aviation aircraft to obtain prior permission before landing at Austin-Bergstrom International Airport through Monday afternoon. This measure aims to ensure safe and orderly management of the increased air

traffic volume.

Traveler Impact and Travel Volume

Passengers heading to Austin on Friday experienced significant delays, with average wait times around 75 minutes and some flights postponed by more than two hours. The Monday following the Grand Prix weekend is projected to be the busiest travel day in Austin-Bergstrom International Airport’s history due to departing crowds. Airport officials expect record commercial travel volumes during this period.
