More than 1,000 flights were cancelled on September 8, 2026, across 15 UK airports including Heathrow, Gatwick, Stansted, London City, Manchester, Birmingham, and Scottish airports, after a failure in Britain’s National Air Traffic Services (NATS) flight processing system disrupted operations.

Airline-Specific Flight Disruptions

British Airways cancelled or diverted more than 100 flights due to the disruption. Ryanair cancelled over 50 flights and disrupted more than 65,000 passengers. EasyJet reported delays and flight cancellations across Europe linked to the air traffic control system failure.

Impact at Major UK Airports

Heathrow Airport resumed departures but suspended arrivals for the remainder of the night. Passengers were stranded for hours on airport

runways and in terminals, with some stuck on planes for up to four hours. Long delays were also reported at baggage claim areas with little assistance provided.

Statements from Airlines and Passenger Reactions

A British Airways spokesperson said: “The severity of the issue means there will be a significant knock-on impact. This incident was entirely out of our control and incredibly frustrating for our customers and colleagues, with aircraft and crews ending up out of place.” Passenger Josie Donoghue described the airport situation as “like trying to get out of Alcatraz” and called it “an absolute nightmare.”

Resolution of the System Failure

National Air Traffic Services resolved the flight processing system

problem in the evening of September 8, 2026, but airlines and airports continued to clear a backlog of delayed flights and cancellations.
