Goa’s tourism sector contributed an estimated 16 to 17 percent to the state economy in 2025, driven by over one crore tourist arrivals, according to www.aninews.in on October 19, 2026.
Employment and Entrepreneurship Beyond Traditional Roles
The growing visitor economy is diversifying opportunities beyond traditional tourism jobs. Local residents are establishing small businesses such as tea stalls and handicraft shops, alongside careers in hospitality. Tourism supports jobs for guides, photographers, beach lifeguards, and other service providers, expanding livelihood options.
Skill Development Initiatives for Youth
Hospitality companies plan skill development initiatives targeting youth who have completed Class 10 or 12. IHCL’s senior vice-president – operations, Goa, Ranjit Philipose, said, “We want to
establish a major skill development centre in Goa, with residential facilities for young people who have completed Class 10 or 12. They will receive training and certification to make them employment-ready.”
Local Entrepreneurs’ Financial Progress
Arvind, a local tea shop entrepreneur, said, “Earlier, we were ordinary workers, but now we have become entrepreneurs. Our financial situation has improved considerably, and we are earning well. Business is also doing well.” Small entrepreneurs like Arvind have improved their livelihoods through tourism.
Environmentally Friendly Products and Local Sellers
Local shopkeeper Mohammed Shafiuddin Sheikh highlighted the sale of handicrafts, souvenirs, and environmentally friendly products as alternatives to plastic. He stated, “These are environmentally friendly
and sustainable products that offer a better alternative to plastic items. We sell souvenirs, bags and various useful products so that customers have a wide range of options.”
Tourism Supports Extended Local Services
Tourists are attracted by Goa’s beaches, shopping, cuisine, and cultural experiences, sustaining demand for local businesses and services. Tourism creates a wider network of livelihood opportunities linked to skill development, employment, and entrepreneurship within the state.
