Toronto Pearson Airport postponed flights on 22 October 2026 following the evacuation of its apron management unit tower after smoke was reported on site. The evacuation disrupted the management of aircraft at gates and loading zones, resulting in delays to both arriving and departing flights.

The apron management unit, which is operated by the Greater Toronto Airports Authority (GTAA), controls the ground movement of aircraft around terminal areas. This function is distinct from air traffic control, which is handled by NAV Canada. NAV Canada’s primary air traffic control tower at Pearson was not evacuated and maintained normal operations throughout the

incident, ensuring pilot communications remained unaffected.

Air Canada characterized the situation as a “safety incident” involving the apron management unit operated by GTAA. The airline stated the event was beyond its control and acknowledged the impact on multiple flights. Air Canada crews actively worked to reduce delays resulting from the evacuation. Passengers affected by the incident were advised to monitor flight status directly with their airlines.
