Droughts and heatwaves during the summer of 2026 caused historically low water levels in major European rivers, affecting navigation on the Danube, Rhine, and their tributaries. The Danube River near Budapest reached water levels close to the lowest recorded in August, while Romania saw the lowest levels since 1996. Persistent lack of rain has prevented recovery, disrupting river cruise operations.

Cruise Lines Responding to Low Water Conditions

European river cruise operators including Tui River Cruises, Riviera Travel, Viking, Uniworld, Travelmarvel, and AmaWaterways have adjusted operations in response to these water shortages. Tui River Cruises apologized to passengers for disruptions on the Danube, where guests were sometimes required

to travel by coach and stay in hotels instead of sailing parts of the itinerary. Riviera Travel cancelled three Danube departures scheduled for October 2026 and revised nine Rhine itineraries. Viking implemented a ship swap in June on its Rhine Getaway cruise.

Itinerary Adjustments and Operational Tactics

Common responses to low water include skipping certain stops, changing routes, ship swaps, and starting cruises at alternative ports. The Rhine itinerary changes for Riviera Travel involved focusing on the Moselle River region, with calls at Cochem, Bernkastel, Trier, and Koblenz instead of traditional stops such as Rüdesheim, Speyer, Strasbourg, and Breisach. Viking conducted a ship swap in

June, where guests spent 24 hours on a ship in Koblenz followed by a five-hour coach transfer to Strasbourg before boarding a sister ship. Some cruises now start from ports with higher water levels or begin with hotel stays and coach transfers, especially in Budapest. Cruise lines deploy sister ships in opposite directions along affected river sections to facilitate ship swaps and reduce disruptions.

Specific Cancellations and Revised Departures

Riviera Travel confirmed three Danube cruise cancellations in October 2026 and nine Rhine departures operated with revised routes over recent weeks. Viking’s Rhine Getaway ship swap took place in June 2026, addressing low levels between Koblenz

and Strasbourg. The Danube saw critically low water levels near Budapest in August 2026, while Romanian river levels reached lows not seen since 1996, impacting cruise itinerary viability in these areas.

Passenger Impact and Insurance Advice

Passengers face missed stops, altered schedules, and may start journeys at different ports or with hotel stays linked to coach transfers. Riviera Travel offered future travel vouchers to guests traveling on significantly revised Rhine routes. Cruise lines generally absorb costs related to these disruptions, such as hotel stays and transfers. Travel insurance specifically covering cruise disruptions and low water scenarios is recommended. Jacqueline Mondelli, CMO of insurance platform Squaremouth,

said, “A cruise insurance plan offers the most protection in this case, as it covers factors such as insufficient water levels.” Industry experts advise travelers to stay in close contact with operators due to the variable nature of river navigation.

Statements from Industry Representatives

James Golding, Riviera Travel’s chief guest experience officer, stated, “2026 has been an unprecedented year for low water on parts of Europe’s rivers. In recent weeks, nine Riviera Travel Rhine departures have operated with revised itineraries, while three Danube departures in October have been cancelled because we did not believe we could deliver the guest experience to Riviera Travel standards.”

He added that the company’s Riviera Holiday Guarantee offers guests options to reschedule or cancel with a refund if major changes occur.

Chris Pitchford, founder of World of Cruising, said, “In some cases, guests have been told that their cruises will start at a nearby port where water levels are higher or that they will begin their trips with a hotel stay in Budapest before being transferred to their ship by coach.” Uniworld highlighted over 50 years of operational experience and collaboration with local authorities to adapt itineraries. Viking explained their ship swap strategy helps preserve itineraries and reduce guest

disruptions by transferring passengers and luggage to identical sister ships.

AmaWaterways noted their ship deployment is planned two years in advance to ensure spare ships are available without passing extra costs to clients. Riviera Travel reported strong support for guests, with head office staff joining sailings where needed, and positive feedback from travelers currently on board.

Industry Context and Trends

Persistently low river water levels remain rare but have grown more frequent, posing navigation challenges during hotter European summers. Rivers such as the Seine, Douro, Mekong, and Nile have not experienced similar low level issues this season. The Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA) reports

growing interest in long-haul river cruises outside Europe, including destinations in Asia and South America, as European waterways face environmental uncertainties.
